News: Two Gallants Vs the Houston Police
10-15-06

Last Friday, October 13th, the Saddle Creek band Two Gallants took the stage at a small Houston club called Walter’s. A police officer was called to the scene because of a noise complaint. From there, two different stories emerge.

The story according to Sergeant Nate McDuell:

In response to a complaint by a neighbor, Officer G.M. Rodriguez had Walter’s management turn the volume down. However, before Rodriguez left the premises, the sound returned to its original volume. Rodriguez went onto the stage where the band Two Gallants were performing and approached the guitar player, Adam Stephens. Stephens offended the cop w/ a sexual obscenity and then pushed him w/ his shoulder.

The story according to Adam Stephens:

While performing onstage, Stephens turned around and saw Officer Rodriguez shining a flashlight in his eyes. The cop told the guitar player to stop playing. Stephens asked Rodriguez, “Why?” The police officer approached Stephens and shouted, “Stop.” Again, Stephens asked why. Rodriguez answered by grabbing Stephens by the neck and slamming him to the floor.

From here, the entire club erupted. People were shoved, cut and bruised, at least two people were tasered, and a valuable upright bass was damaged. Additional police arrived on the scene and at least 4 arrests were made.

The next day, a first-hand account of the incident was posted by “cool tapes” on his myspace blog.

The blog included photos and videos and can be found here.
